In India for the past 16 years, nearly 47 farmers have been committing suicide every day, because of deteriorating land productivity and unreliable monsoons.

The PRICE POOR FARMERS PAY to fight reducing yield with quick “fixes” is their entire harvest pledged as collateral, sold at below market price or for free to middlemen lenders. Or becoming bonded labourers.

Milaap’s Sustainable Farming loans seek to better the lives of poor farming families by improving access to agricultural inputs, crop and livestock insurance, targeted technical assistance, agricultural training, and access to supply chain solutions that reduce dependencies on middlemen.

Our Projects

Our Projects

We work with our field partners on customized agricultural loans to farmers needing credit to purchase seeds and other inputs at the start of the growing season. Farmers tend to have larger credit needs and nine to twelve month growth cycles. But weekly loan repayment schedules of traditional microfinance don’t work for farmers, mainly because they cannot start repaying loans until they harvest.

Milaap Projects Our Projects, customized agricultural loans

Our Projects

We give loans on regular repayment schedules to finance dairy, poultry, horticultural, and other products specifically chosen to create immediate cash flow. This is to protect farmers from seasonal risks inherent in agriculture and diversify their sources of income.

Our Projects

Our Projects

Our loans are specifically provided for installing cost-efficient systems and improving storage and distribution facilities. The loans also help build missing links in the value chain to optimize resources and promote sustainability. For instance, funding local women micro-entrepreneurs selling organic fertilizers to small farmers.

Milaap Projects, Innovation in agriculture

Our Projects

We aim to promote promising and affordable technologies, such as the drip irrigation system that optimizes water productivity and increases agricultural yield. Such innovations enable small farmers to generate a higher output of quality products at lower costs.

Lend, Share, Fundraise Water

Linking small farmers to markets and organizing them into cooperatives from otherwise fragmented land-holdings has many benefits. It results in an availability of essential work-force within agricultural belts, apart from generating optimum income.

Sustainable farming methods help reduce the harmful impact of climate change and biodiversity destruction:

1.Educated and trained farmers improve their efficiency in the use of fertilizers, curbing soil pollution.

2.Community cisterns and irrigation systems facilitate prudent and non-wasteful use of water supplies, and

3.Reforestation projects around farmlands improve and maintain the general health of arable land

Employing farming methods that preserve the soil’s natural nutrients and cultivate healthy farm lands leads to enhanced and sustainable mid to long-term farm yields. It also improves soil fertility while retaining the nutritional value of the produce. This contributes significantly to social welfare through food security.
