Guardian - Trichy, Tamil Nadu

India's first and only microfinance institution with an exclusive focus on water and sanitation, Guardian provides credit for household piped water connections, toilets, water purifiers and innovative solutions based on local demands and constraints. Today it has disbursed loans of around USD 3 million for over 18,000 water and sanitation facilities, widening its presence to more than 150 villages in nine districts.

Guardian engages with local village and town councils to ensure their co-operation in providing water connections from the village tank and constructing community toilets. This ensures rightful utilization of the loan and augments existing government reimbursement schemes. With a repayment rate of 99.95%, Guardian is scripting a new chapter in social innovation.
